Dallas Study Tour

This course is designed to engage students in an intense study of an area pertinent to the field of merchandising.  Dallas serves as a prime venue for those pursuing a career in merchandising.  Students will experience the fashion and home furnishings industries through visits to manufacturing facilities, retail establishments, retail corporate offices, and industry support organizations.

Class will meet each Friday during the semester.  We will travel to the Dallas area on nine of the Fridays and will meet on campus from 9:00 to noon on the remaining days.  Transportation will be provided via chartered bus leaving the Denton campus at 8:00 am and returning to Denton at noon.  All students will be required to travel on the bus.

Digital Study Tour – Seattle, Portland, San Francisco

This course is designed to expose students to the Digital Retailing industry and engage them in an intense study of key impact online businesses. The route begins in Seattle, then travels by train South along the coastline to Portland, Oregon, and finally to the Silicon Valley in San Francisco, which are all prime locations for pursuing a career in eCommerce and digital occupations. Students benefit from an exclusive behind the scenes viewpoint, meeting with industry executives and experiencing firsthand how websites are built and maintained as well as how the supporting technologies are integrated and utilized. During this fast-paced 5 day living and learning experience, students tour corporate headquarters facilities of marquis retailers and social media giants while also experiencing the sights, sounds and tastes of the U.S. West coast.

Ecuador

Tour the highlands of Ecuador and gain new perspectives on the textile and apparel industry. Students visit small cottage craft factories and industries that fuel the Ecuadorian and similar third-world economies to study apparel, textile craft, sourcing and product development. Create a fabric design and hand-print a length of fabric with native craftsmen.
